Aurora

Designed by Gastone Rinaldi in 1981 for his company Thema, the Aurora chair represents one of the most significant works of his design maturity, marking an evolution towards the aesthetic language of postmodernism.

Formal and Design Profile

Aurora reflects a more colorful and playful approach to the use of industrial materials, moving away from the lines of the two previous decades to explore new expressive possibilities. The chair is characterized by an oven-lacquered metal frame, combined with a padded seat or in perforated sheet metal, combining research on functionality and technical perfection – typical of the Thema catalog – with a less invasive formal sensitivity that is more attentive to the aesthetic dimension of contemporary living.

Awards and Historical Significance

The model gained important institutional recognition by receiving the Selection at the Compasso d’Oro Award in 1981 (XII edition); in the same year, the famous folding chair Dafne was also awarded. This double recognition sanctions the success of the Thema production, which was capable of reinterpreting the typology of the domestic chair with rigor and originality.
